“Do you think she is lying?” Raoul Saldata folded his arms across his chest, and spoke to Garth as the two men leaned against the front of the rental car.

“I don’t know, boss.” They’d been over this ground before, but Saldata had to hash it over again to be sure. “Twenty minutes? I didn’t think we’d driven that long, but I can’t be sure.”

“Worthless bitch is lying.” Saldata shook his head. “She is covering for Dovner, I am sure of it.”

“She would not have had to tell us she recognized Dovner,” Garth argued. “We would never have known, if not for her.”

“You were driving,” Saldata responded. “I turned and saw her face when she said it. She did not mean to say it. It was mistake. She just…” for a second, he hesitated, not able to remember the word he wanted in English, but then it came to him, “blurted it out. An accident.”

Saldata was furious. This was just the end of a long, terrible week in which he’d been frustrated every day, all day. This American female, this maskara cook, had beaten him at every turn, and now the forces of nature were helping. Whatever this thing was that had happened that made all the cars stop, made the phones stop working, he knew logically it could not possibly have anything to do with Lori Dovner, but right now logic was the last thing he cared about. If not for her, he’d be in his house in Miami, far away from… this. Whatever “this” was. So, it was her fault, and for that, she was going to pay.

They had to do something. It had now been five hours – perhaps even more – since the car had stopped working. So far, the only decisive action he’d taken was to instruct Garth to confiscate Ajoli’s gun. He turned his head and let his eyes flickered to the car’s backseat, where the woman sat. He could just barely see her hidden behind the neck restraints but she was only sitting there, her head turned to look out the window at… nothing. Did she realize it? Had she looked in her handbag? She must have by now.

Something was going to have to happen, soon. They had no cold weather clothing. Ajoli, he was sure, was still warm enough in the closed car with the sun shining, but in just an hour or two, the sun would be gone. He was already cold in the wind, but he’d pushed the discomfort away because he hadn’t wanted to sit in the car with her. Soon, though, he’d have no choice. They also had no food. He was a big man with a big appetite, Garth as well. They’d gone through a fast food line on their way out of Billings, but those breakfast sandwiches and coffee were a long way in the past now. Saldata knew that while food was optional – at least for a while – water was not.
